We’re teaming up with our favourite tequila flavoured beer to bring some of our favourite bands & DJs for a BIG FUN CELEBRATION coinciding with the end of this year’s Great Escape and because we’re GENEROUS the whole shebang is free entry, regardless of your ticket status or the speediness of your RSVP. Again, we’re based at The Loft on Ship Street on Saturday 18 May from eleven pm until something stupid in the morning.
Shah is of Norwegian and Pakistani parentage from a small coastal town called Whitburn, but she could just as easily be the result of a steamy union between Polly Harvey and Nick Cave. That’s the lineage to which her dark tales of lust and loss, revenge and regret belong, although she also cites as influences everyone from Philip Larkin and Frida Kahlo to Black Flag and Arthur Russell as well as the religious Sufi songs that her father would play during car rides and the ghazals he sang in Urdu around the house. Think also Marianne Faithfull, not the prim young creature courted by Mick Jagger in the mid-60′s, but the ravaged, battle-worn survivor who re-emerged with Broken English in the late 70′s.
Shah owns a management company promoting other Newcastle musicians and has recently completed her debut album “Love Your Dumb and Mad” with producer Ben Hiller.
What’s not good about January? Most things. But what is good is our series of free shows featuring the finest, freshest and fiercest musical talent in the UK. Curated with the gentleman at Neu, we’ve come up with the perfect tonic to the weight-gain/wallet-light/wet-weather blues that usually absorbs the first month of the year.
From the americana satisfaction of Wolf Alice, and the forward thinking craftiness of pop-princess Syron, to the Birmingham-indie-boys-done-good Jaws, and the stadium-ready sound of Sheffield’s Death Rays of Ardilla, we hope there is something for every ear:
